The trip was amazing. In fact, both of your daughters promised their second cousin that they would certainly be returning to Costa Rica sometime soon. The water falls, the volcanoes, the zip lining, the beach house, the surfing, the market. It was all amazing. And even though you agreed with your daughters that it was an amazing trip, it is difficult for you to get over the fact that you dealt with sleeping in a bed that was in a room that had fallen victim to a termite infestation.
Although you knew that the Costa Rican vacation would include plenty of heat, humidity, and bugs, it was difficult to hide your surprise when your cousin answered your question about why you woke every morning to lots of black little specks on your pillow. When she sheepishly explained that it was termite poop, you tried to laugh it off. The reality was, however, that you were fairly freaked out that the roof of the room you were sleeping in was one of three locations in her house that had suffered from a termite infestation in the last few months. Your hosts were in the process of deciding what to do about the problem, but quite frankly, she indicated that the termites, like the tarantulas, were simply a part of their new life.
Do You Have a Termite Infestation or Other Pest Control Issue on Your Property?
In a time when the country seems to be increasingly aware of the safety and the health issues that surround us, some of the most common inconveniences are still the age old problems of termites, bed bugs, and bees. Often more than a nuisance, bed bugs, bees, and termite infestations can become major problems and typically require the help of exterminators or pest control services.
Termites. Finding out that you have a termite infestation in America is not quite like finding out about termites in a Central American rainforest. Left unchecked, in fact, termites can ruin a home. For this reason, many home buyers demand termite inspections before the buy any home, especially in southern parts of the country. In an average year, for example, termites are responsible for $1 billion to $2 billion in property damage. Considering that they damage 600,000 homes a year, it should come as no surprise that termites don?t need much room to squeeze inside your home or business. In fact, research indicates that they can enter a structure through a space as small as 1/32nd of an inch.
Both the warning signs and the solution to termites can be difficult, and for this reason many people find that they need to work with a pest control service for both inspections and solutions. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), American residents spend at least $1 billion on Formosan termite control and repairs every single year. Some experts estimate, however, that the number is closer to $2 billion.
Bed bugs. Avoiding bed bugs when you travel to hotels or rent cabins can sometimes be a challenge. If you are ever unfortunate enough to stay in a place that has bed bugs and then bring the problem into your own home you will find yourself facing an extensive and expensive extermination situation. It may come as a frightening statistic, but 99.6% of pest professionals have treated bed bugs in the past year. This statistic is unchanged from the year 2013, but it is higher when it is compared to statistics from five, 10, and 15 years ago. In fact, the bed bug problem has grown increasingly worse in many parts of the country. And while many people thing of this as a problem that only affects the cheapest hotels, the reality is that hotels in all price ranges have experienced the problem.
Treating for be bugs is a complicated process that can involve chemicals and high heat. And since homeowners form all kinds of lifestyles and incomes experience the problem, exterminators are becoming increasingly better at their treatment methods. According to recent reports, the top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are apartments/condominiums (95%), and single-family homes (93%), and hotels and motels (75%). Getting immediate professional help is always recommended.
