When it comes to kitchen cabinet designs, the options are limitless. Selecting the right one can be a bit of a headache. This video breaks down the differences between to popular options: the Mission and the Shaker designs.
Both the Mission and Shaker cabinets are relatively simple designs. The Mission was inspired by furnishings found in Franciscan seminaries in California in the early 1900s. It shied away from the ornate designs of the time.
The Shaker door is even more simplistic. Usually, Shakers use close, as opposed to open, grain wood. The finishes can be different, but it’s usually more subtle than the Mission’s open grain wood.
Shakers are excellent transitional pieces, as you can make them very modern looking with a simple change of metal handle. The Mission is more traditional from the outset. You can still add things like framing beams to change things up.
There are plenty of options when it comes to furnishing your kitchen, and cabinets come in a variety of shapes and looks. Shaker cabinets are more simple and easier to use in a variety of circumstances, whereas Mission cabinets hold a classic look that, while amendable, will narrow your options. Still, it’s beautiful woodworking, either way.
